We are happy to share a reminder from BDO Sweden regarding tax relief for foreign employees. If you have any questions, please contact Erik Hedlund, Senior Tax Manager at BDO Sweden.

Have you been granted a five-year tax relief in Sweden?

Reminder to review if you are eligible for an extension to seven years. Swedish tax relief for employment income is available to qualified foreign employees. The tax relief renders 25% of total gross income tax-free. The relief also impacts employer contributions in the same way. Some compensation items can be provided free of tax and employer contributions entirely. Eligible individuals must apply for the tax relief no later than three months from their start of work in Sweden, otherwise the opportunity is lost.

From 1 January 2024, the Swedish tax relief for qualified foreign employees was extended from five to seven years. If you arrived in Sweden after 31 March 2023 and have been granted a five-year tax relief, you are eligible for an extension.

If eligible, the application for an extension must be filed no later than 31 March 2024. Late applications will not be considered and there are no exceptions, regardless of the reason for the late filing.
